Writers’ Inspiration

You often hear someone say: “I have got to write, but I have no inspiration”. I think we all have an idea of what that means, but what is writers‘ inspiration?

As a writer, you probably have a story to tell. If you are determined and even passionate about what you have to say, you have inspiration. You have the picture in your mind, and you have the empty canvas in front of you. You want to paint. You really want to paint. If that is not inspiration, then what is? The only thing that can stop you then is what is called writer’s block. Never confuse the two. Writer’s block is genuine. Unfortunately, even great writers have it from time to time. Writer’s block is the inability to find or develop a storyline. The good news is that it goes away. The bad news is that it does not go away when you want it. Writer’s block can be overcome by being patient.

Writers’ inspiration is different. It is a driving force. It is something of the heart. Without it, you are aimless. Where then do you find inspiration? You see it when you are passionate about something. Write about a subject that stirs your emotions. Think about it and build your story around it. Sometimes writer inspiration can start as a tiny seed. You hear something, and it begins to stand up in your mind at the most unexpected times. A good writer will use that. He or she will recognise it and let it grow into an idea that may not pass before it has become a story.

Once you are in that state of mind, many things will inspire you. A flower or a dog that you see on your early morning walk may be enough to spark a few sentences. Grab onto them, play with them and develop them into an idea that will start as a trickle and turn into a waterfall.

You may be passionate about saving the rhino. Somewhere, sometimes you will want to write about it. Weave the issue into a plot. Soon enough, the artist in you will take over. You will find your background, your characters and your story. Do not kill your own writers’ inspiration by saying: “I am not inspired”. Everyone has issues that are close to their heart. Think about those issues; let them be your motivation. Start to tell your story. It will soon take its own course.
