Self Publishing Versus Traditional Publishing

Should I publish my book myself or take it to a publisher? The debate continues as to which one is better. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Whether you are a beginner or not, there is little doubt that at least tipping a toe into the waters of self-publishing holds many benefits.

Advantages of self-publishing

First, the financial benefit you will receive is much greater than those generated by publishing through a publishing house. You sell, and you take the money. There is nobody to take most of it away from you. Publishers are not interested in your work, especially if you are an unknown writer. J.K. Rowling, for instance, received a “we are sorry but” -letter from twelve publishers before one finally accepted a manuscript.

If you achieve the impossible and your work does get accepted by a publisher, you lose the book’s rights. All you will get from something you created out of nothing are the royalties, which are far from great. Publishers also have a way of telling you what to do and how to do it. They dictate what should be in the book and whatnot and how it should be formulated. You have complete control of the content and layout when you do it yourself. You are the boss. Your message reaches the world the way that you want. You do not have to negotiate with anyone about the risks of publishing your book. Nobody is taking risks except you, and if you know what you are doing, self-publishing can be inexpensive and risk-free.

Publishing your book is a quick process. You can write about a hot topic. By the time your book is finished, interest in that topic will still be high. Publishers can easily sit on your manuscript for a year. You are navigating the writing process yourself without any help or guidance. That learning curve will prove valuable the next time you decide to put a book on the market.

The world is moving forward, and self-publishing is gaining steam as it does. More and more, once great authors start by putting their stunning works on the shelves. Once they do, big publishing houses begin taking notice. There is a lot to say about self-publishing. It is the way of the future.
